The research priorities are oriented towards the priority interests and responsibilities of the three professorships. At the same time, emphasis is placed on transversal cooperation and a critical discourse.

- Study of religions with a focus on social sciences (Prof. D. Lüddeckens)
- Study of religions with a focus on a systematic-theoretical approach (Prof. R. Walthert)
The three research groups meet regularly for workshops and colloquia. In addition, department members develop research in the intersection of religion, religious education and religious studies didactics as well as initiatives independent of the chairs such as the GRC Peer Group Religion and Politics.
